My son contracted small pox from a recent immunization he received in preparations for deployment to Afghanistan. He is quarantined at this time and due to visit me on the 17th of November. I cant wait to see him but I am concerned also that many of the people he will be visiting have never been vaccinated for small pox. The last known US case was in 1949 as far as I know. I just don't know enough about it and I am also worried about my son who never gives me the entire scoop of information as he doesn't like for me to worry. He sounds in pretty good spirits but also has a very high threshold for pain because of his endurance as a child through many surgeries and sports injuries. He was just released from the hospital 3 weeks ago for H1N1 and has just recovered from that! His immune system was really good as a child and was hardly ever sick. He has been ill since he has been in the military. NOW HE HAS SMALL POX! I feel really helpless at this point not knowing what to do and not being able to do anything for him.
